Science
We nurture a sense of wonder as children investigate the natural and man-made world. Children learn about Materials, distinguishing between objects and the substances they are made from. We explore the properties of wood, metal, and glass, with a significant focus on sustainability and plastics. Children investigate the versatility of plastic, its role in food packaging, and the environmental importance of reducing single-use items through creative alternatives like beeswax wraps. By testing which materials are best suited for tasks—such as building model bridges or surviving the elements—pupils learn to compare physical properties and understand the journey from natural resources to man-made products.
Our exploration of Plants and Living Things takes children from our own local micro-habitats to the global impact of the rainforests. Pupils observe the life cycles of seeds and bulbs, discovering the essential roles of water, light, and temperature in healthy growth. We delve into Animals and Humans, identifying the basic structures of birds, fish, mammals, and reptiles, while also classifying them by their diets as carnivores, herbivores, or omnivores. Children learn to label the human body and associate parts with the five senses, while also considering the importance of exercise, hygiene, and balanced nutrition. We study how living things depend on their habitats for survival, fostering an early commitment to Fairtrade, or
